ITALY: LAWYERS AND PSYCHOLOGISTS ASSIST HUNDREDS OF THE “NEW POOR” IN ROME

Rome, 4 March 2010 There are the elderly who consult the volunteer lawyers about their disability pension; parents of children with mental disorders who request psychological assistance; the unemployed seeking help to pay electricity and gas bills and kindergarten fees; single mothers collecting their parcels of nappies and baby food. Hundreds of destitute people, 90% Italian plus a minority of foreigners, are assisted every year in the ten community centres and four family guidance units that the Grand Priory opened over twenty years ago and which the members of the Order of Malta and volunteers run in various parishes in Rome.

THE GRAND MASTER MEETS PRESIDENT KIBAKI IN KENYA: “TOGETHER FOR THE MILLENNIUM GOALS”

Nairobi, 20 February 2010 The numerous cooperation projects that the Order of Malta has launched in Kenya since 2001 were the focus of the talks that the Grand Master had with the country’s leading authorities on Tuesday 16 February. Fra’ Matthew Festing first met Foreign Minister Moses Wetangula and immediately after was received by the President of the Republic Mwai Kibaki at Harambee House
President Kibaki stressed the importance of the Order’s assistance in the government’s efforts to create an equitable social development. The Head of State expressed his gratitude for the medicines and emergency food aid supplied to inhabitants of the drought-affected north-eastern province.

THE GRAND MASTER IN BUKAVU, THEATRE OF CLASHES AND VIOLENCE

Bukavu, Congo, 15 February 2010 The journey of the Order of Malta’s Grand Master Fra’ Matthew Festing in the Democratic Republic of the Congo continued Thursday through Sunday in Bukavu, on the Rwanda border, where he visited the social-health activities run since 1996 by Malteser International, the Order’s International Relief Corps. Received by the regional governor, the Grand Master met the local administrators with whom he discussed the living conditions of the population who have suffered serious and repeated aggression during the clashes of recent years.
