HAITI: WATER, SANITATION AND HYGIENE BECOME THE BIG ISSUES

Port-au-Prince, 29 January 2010 From today the team from the Order of Malta’s emergency relief Corps, Malteser International, has taken over the health post camp in Leogane - 30 Km far from the Capital Port-au-Prince. The team - medical doctors, nurses, a midwife and a paramedic - is providing basic medical assistance both in the camp and the surrounding areas. In addition, the team will support urgently needed vaccination campaigns. The World Health Organisation reports occurrences of tetanus and suspicions of measles though this is not yet confirmed.

HAITI: “SACRE COEUR” HOSPITAL CONTINUES TO RECEIVE INJURED PEOPLE

Port-au-Prince, 26 January 2010 The Order’s “Sacre Coeur” hospital in Milot, northern Haiti, has been working flat out since 12 January with a constant stream of wounded people arriving by helicopter or along the rough roads from the Port-au-Prince region. Assisted by their French colleagues, the doctors have treated dozens of survivors of the devastating earthquake which struck southern Haiti. Around 70 US volunteer doctors and nurses are working in the hospital, which is preparing to receive at least 100 patients (normally it offers 73 beds) as well as treating others and rehabilitating post-op patients.

HAITI, MALTESER INTERNATIONAL’S DOCTORS: “LITTLE HOPE FOR SEVERELY INJURED CHILDREN"

The distribution of food and medicine continues in five camps on the outskirts of Port-au-Prince

“Yesterday we were able to operate successfully on a ten-year-old girl. But there is little hope for those with more severe injuries”. This is Dr. Klaus Runggaldier speaking, one of the three Malteser International medics who arrived last Sunday in the Haitian capital. The Order of Malta’s Relief Corps has joined international rescue teams after the earthquake which has caused a serious humanitarian situation in a country where 80% of the population was already fighting to survive on a dollar a day.
